30 Date Night Games for Couples, at Home or Out on a Date

30 date night games for couples: no-equipment games for the couch, card and question games, games for a night out, and a few for when you're apart.

The short answer

The best date night games need nothing but the two of you: two truths and a lie, rank three, twenty questions and who's more likely. Add a deck of cards for Speed or a Jenga set for question Jenga. Out to dinner, guess each other's order. For bigger nights, keep one two-player game like Codenames: Duet or It Takes Two. Apart? Play movie bingo while you watch the same film.

The best date night games for couples need nothing but the two of you: two truths and a lie, rank three, twenty questions or who's more likely. For a bigger night, add a deck of cards, a two-player board game like Codenames: Duet or a co-op video game like It Takes Two. Here are 30 fun games for couples, sorted by what you need, with quick rules and times.

Date Night Games With No Equipment (1 to 7)

The easiest games for couples to play at home, with nothing to set up. Good for nights you're both tired.

  1. Two truths and a lie, before we met. Each of you says three things about your life before you met. One is made up, and the other has to spot it. (10 minutes)
  2. Rank three. Name a category, like pizza toppings or trips you've taken together. You each pick a top three in your head, then say your number one at the same time, then two, then three. A point for every pick you share. (10 minutes)
  3. Twenty questions about us. One of you thinks of something from your relationship, like a place or an inside joke. The other gets twenty yes or no questions to guess it. (15 minutes)
  4. The alphabet game. Pick a topic, like foods or films, and take turns going from A to Z. Stuck for five seconds and you lose the round. (10 minutes)
  5. Hum the song. Hum a song with your mouth closed and your partner gets three guesses. A point for every song guessed. (10 minutes)
  6. Charades for two. Act out a film, a song or a friend you both know while the other guesses. One minute a turn, first to five wins. (20 minutes)
  7. Staring contest. Sit close and look each other in the eye. First to laugh or look away owes a kiss, or does the dishes. (5 minutes)

Pen and Paper, Cards or Dice (8 to 13)

  1. Venn diagram of us. Draw two overlapping circles and fill them in: things only you love, things only your partner loves, and things you both love. (15 minutes)
  2. Date night dice. Write six games from this list on paper, numbered 1 to 6. Roll a die to pick one, then roll again for who goes first. No die? Use a dice app. (1 minute to set up)
  3. Speed. A fast card game for two. Split the deck, and each of you holds five cards from your half. Flip one card each into the middle, then both play at once: put down any card one higher or lower than a middle card, and refill your hand to five. Both stuck? Flip two new middle cards. First to run out wins. If Speed's too fast, gin rummy and crazy eights work with the same deck. (5 minutes a round)
  4. Pictionary for two. Write twenty things on scraps of paper and fold them into a bowl. Take turns drawing one while the other guesses, a minute each. (20 minutes)
  5. Question Jenga. Write a question or a small dare on each block with a marker, then answer or do whatever you pull. No Jenga? A jar of folded questions works. (30 minutes)
  6. Paper fortune teller. Fold one like you did at school and write a small prize under each flap: a foot rub, picking the next film, a cup of tea made for you. (10 minutes to make)

Couple Question Games (14 to 18)

A lot of couples games sold in a box, like We're Not Really Strangers, are question games. You can play them free tonight.

  1. Who's more likely. One of you asks "who's more likely to..." (cry at a film, get lost, forget a birthday) and you both point on three. A point every time you agree. (15 minutes)
  2. Never have I ever. Hold up five fingers each. Take turns saying something you've never done, and if your partner has, they put a finger down. First to zero loses. (15 minutes)
  3. This or that. Fire quick choices at each other, like beach or mountains, and answer without thinking. Start with these this or that questions for couples. (10 minutes)
  4. Would you rather. Take turns with hard choices, and you have to explain your answer. Try these would you rather questions for couples. (15 minutes)
  5. How well do you know me. It's the classic how well do you know your partner game. Each of you writes ten questions about yourself (your comfort food, what you wanted to be at ten) and the other answers. A point for each right answer. Amora has quizzes where you each answer in private and both answers unlock together. For more to ask, try these get to know you questions for couples. (20 minutes)

Some date night game questions to get you going:

  • Who's more likely to fall asleep first on movie night?
  • Who's more likely to eat the last slice and say nothing?
  • Never have I ever pretended to like a gift.
  • Would you rather have a weekend away every month or one big trip a year?

And for how well do you know me, try these. Each one has a right answer, so you can keep score:

  • What's my go-to coffee order?
  • Who said "I love you" first?
  • What's my most played song this month?
  • What would I order at a diner at 2am?
  • Which friend would I call first with big news?
  • What's one food I'd never eat?
  • What's my go-to karaoke song?
  • What's my favorite snack at the movies?

Games to Play Out on a Date (19 to 23)

Games to play on a date while you wait for a table, drive somewhere or walk home.

  1. People-watching backstories. Pick a table across the room and make up their story together: who they are, how they met, whether it's a first date. Take turns adding details, quietly. (Until the food comes)
  2. Guess the order. Before the waiter comes, each of you writes down what the other will order, drink included. A point for every right guess. (5 minutes)
  3. Bar trivia night. Lots of bars run a weekly quiz night. Go as a team of two and pick your team name on the way there. (About 2 hours)
  4. Road sign alphabet. In the car, find the letters A to Z in order on signs and license plates. Whoever calls a letter first gets the point. (One drive)
  5. Photo scavenger hunt. On a walk, give each other five things to photograph, like a heart shape, a dog that looks like one of you and the ugliest door on the street. First to get all five wins. (30 minutes)

Board, Card and Video Games Worth Owning (24 to 27)

If you want to buy couples games for date night, these four are made for two players and easy to learn.

  1. Codenames: Duet. A co-op word guessing game, so you win or lose together. You each see a different key card and give one-word clues so the other picks the right words. Pandemic is another co-op pick. (15 minutes)
  2. Patchwork. A short, calm two-player game where you each build a quilt from oddly shaped pieces. If you like it, Hive is another quick game made for two. (30 minutes)
  3. The Fox in the Forest. A card game made for two. You each play one card at a time to win tricks, but win too many and you score nothing. The box is small enough to bring to a café or on a trip. (30 minutes)
  4. It Takes Two. A co-op video game about a couple, made for exactly two players. Play it side by side on the couch, a few levels a night. (An hour or so)

Games for When You're Apart (28 to 30)

For when you live apart, or one of you is away for the holidays.

  1. Movie bingo. You each make a bingo card of things that might happen in the film (someone says the title, a slow motion walk), then watch it together. With Amora Max, our Chrome extension date night by Amora keeps Netflix or YouTube in sync on both your laptops, each on your own account, with your partner on video beside the show. Call bingo in the chat. (One film)
  2. Guess the photo. Send a zoomed-in photo of something in your room, and your partner gets three guesses. It works over text. (5 minutes)
  3. A board game on a call. Board Game Arena has free online versions of lots of real board games, many for two players. Keep the video on. (30 minutes)

How to Run a Couples Game Night

  • Phones in another room. A game only works if you're both actually playing.
  • Stop while it's still fun. You'll want to play again next week.
  • Go co-op if someone hates losing. Codenames: Duet and It Takes Two put you on the same team.
  • Play for something small. The loser picks dessert, makes breakfast or plans the next date.
  • Try something new now and then. In a 2000 study by Arthur Aron and colleagues, couples who spent 7 minutes on a new, tricky task together (crawling across gym mats tied together at the wrist and ankle) felt better about their relationship afterwards than couples who did a dull one.

Keep It Going Between Dates

Game night is one evening a week. The rest of the week, it helps to share one small thing: one good question a day, answered by both of you. That is what Amora does every day, so the next game night starts with something new to talk about.

The daily question

What ten seconds of us would you replay if you could?

Your questions, answered.

What are good couple games for two people?

Two truths and a lie, rank three, twenty questions, who's more likely and charades need nothing but the two of you. With a deck of cards, try Speed. For board games made for two, Codenames: Duet, Patchwork and The Fox in the Forest are all easy to learn.

What games can couples play without anything?

Twenty questions, the alphabet game, hum the song, charades, never have I ever, would you rather and a staring contest. None of them need cards, a board or an app, so you can play them on the couch or in bed, and most of them in the car.

What is a 20 questions game for couples?

One of you thinks of something and the other gets twenty yes or no questions to guess it. In the couples version, the answer is always something from your relationship, like a place you've been together, a meal you shared or an inside joke.

What are fun games to play with your boyfriend or girlfriend?

Start with something quick, like rank three or who's more likely, and try a co-op game like It Takes Two if you both like video games. Out to dinner, guess each other's order or make up stories about the people at the next table.

What is The Couples Game Late Night?

It's a boxed game from DSS Games, a flirtier spin on their Couples Game, rated 17 and up. It comes with 150 questions and two dry-erase boards, so you each write your answer and compare. For a free version tonight, play how well do you know me with pen and paper.

What card games can couples play?

Speed, gin rummy and crazy eights all work with one normal deck and two players. Cribbage does too if you have a board to keep score. The Fox in the Forest is a card game made just for two, in a small box you can take anywhere.
